Tip: Be Patient Early in the Race One of the keys to racing to your fitness level in a 5k is simply learning to hold back in the first 10%-20% of the race. You've probably even heard that the best way to run is an even split race with a kick at the end. I couldn't agree more, yet that race - or specifically that "race distribution" - is easier said than done. Why? Because everyone around you takes off at a pace they can't sustain and you have to hold your self back. It's hard, but it's worth it if your conservative first mile leads to a PR by the end of the race. So, if you're a novice or if you're stuck in a rut with your 5k PR, take a look at the first 400m, 800m and mile of your 5k. People should be running away from you...and if you're patient you'll be running right past them in the final mile. Jay Johnson *Coach Jay's advice is provided as general training information.
