Cruise Intervals - NIU Distance Workout 2012

Tempo Intervals

Here is a video of a recent workout with Courtney Oldenburg, Juliane Totzke and Jamie Burr.  The group is completing “tempo intervals”.  These intervals are done at an intensity that is near the upper end of what most coaches refer to as the lactate threshold.  Typical tempo interval workouts for our group include intervals between 2K and 3K each with a total volume of 6K to 10K.  Sometimes tempo intervals are as short as 1K and as long as 4K each.  The typical recovery between is one-minute per kilometer run. Every NIU middle and long distance event group runner will complete tempo intervals within their training plan.  The frequency of these types of workouts vary for each individual and event specialty group.

Oldenburg (Jr.) and Totzke (So.) completed their intervals at paces between 5:36-5:48 per mile.  Burr (Fr.) completed hers at paces between 6:04-6:14 per mile.  Oldenburg has run 4:29 for 1500m and 4:54i for the Mile.  Totzke is a 9:54 3K and 35:21 10K runner.  Burr is a 800-meter runner with a best of 2:13.
