For those of you who don’t know, my name is Kristin Zarrella. I’m a senior this year at Lakewood Ranch High School, and we all know what that means: This is it!

After years of hard work, trials and triumphs, high school running will be coming to an end for the class of 2013. I am beyond excited to begin the next chapter of my life as a college student, but it’s not over yet. This year, it’s time to not hold anything back, lay it all on the line, and leave nothing up to luck.

Every runner knows that preparation is key. I have been fortunate enough to stay healthy throughout a long summer of training; without a doubt, it has been my strongest summer yet. I attended FSU camp in July and I’ve been eager to race ever since. There are definitely some other influences that have triggered this newfound zeal. Above all, my teammate and friend Olivia Ortiz has inspired me to utilize every moment I have, and recognize the blessing that it is to be able to run. Olivia is an inspiration and she always has been. As a team captain last year, Olivia set an impeccable standard and we have all learned from her relentless work ethic and esteem. She has been such an enormous blessing to not only me, but to our entire running program and school. This season, we’re running for her.

Speaking of “we”, I guess it’s okay if I reveal a few team secrets. I think the team definitely realizes that this season won’t be as effortless without the help of Devin McDermott and Olivia Ortiz. Losing Devin to graduation and Olivia to an injury, it’s only natural to fall in the rankings. That being said, I still see so much promise in our young team. This season, we have three seniors to lead the way (myself, Natalie Novak, and Ashley Platt) as well as a core group of underclassmen that might just surprise everyone! Katie Wray, Emily Perez, and Michelle Last could very well be a few names to look out for this season. The journey might not be easy, but don’t count Lakewood Ranch out just yet!
We’ll kick off the season this Saturday at the Barron Collier Invitational, where we'll be facing an incredibly talented field of girls. Ever since track ended, I have been anxiously awaiting the opportunity to race again against the top teams in the state. I’m approaching this season with a mindset unlike any I’ve ever had before. I can’t wait to see the great things that God has in store for our entire team this year. I wish everyone running this weekend the best of luck, as well as best wishes for the season that ensues!
